Course Director Leonard Mermel is a Professor of Medicine at the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University and Medical Director for the Department of Epidemiology & Infection at Rhode Island Hospital. He was 2005 President of the Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America (SHEA), 2014 SHEA Mentor Scholar Award recipient, and 2016 recipient of The Milton W. Hamolsky Outstanding Physician Award from the Rhode Island Hospital Medical Staff Association. He is past recipient of the Ralph A. Kinsella, Sr. Memorial Tribute Award from St. Louis University, SHEA Young Investigator Award, and Brown Medical School Department of Medicine Chairman’s Award for Outstanding Teaching. He’s a member of Delta Omega Honorary Public Health Society. Dr. Mermel and Dr. David Classen together developed the idea for the Compendium of Strategies to Prevent Healthcare-Associated Infections in Acute Care Hospitals. He has co-authored guidelines on intravascular catheter infections and >150 articles on infection control and infectious diseases.
